Sub-Saharan Africa has a large treatment gap for psychiatric care services, with a ratio of approximately one psychiatrist to 1·5 million people.1 Most countries in the region commit less than 1% of their health budget to psychiatric care, with an emphasis on institution-based care often marked by gross human rights violation. Success in addressing these challenges over the next 10 years will depend on how well psychiatrists and policy makers leverage existing resources and redefine the role of the African psychiatrist in an increasingly digitally connected continent.
