  • Novel reactive dyes with intramolecular color matching combination containing different chromophores

    Five novel reactive dyes by intramolecular color matching combination based on azo and anthraquinone multiple chromophores were designed and synthesized. They were obtained by using 1-amino-8-naphthol-3,6-disulfonicacid (H-acid) or 2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulfonic Acid (J-acid) as the coupling component, 4-(ethylsulfurate sulfonyl) aniline as the diazo component and 1-amino-2-sulfonic acid-4-(3-amino-2,4,6-trimethyl-5-sulfonic acid phenylamine) anthraquinone sodium salt derivatives as the anthraquinone chromophore. The chemical structures of the synthesized dyes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and ultraviolet–visible spectra (UV–Vis). The dyes containing both azo and anthraquinone chromophores showed novel and beautiful color, including taupe, violet, brown, rosy and claret-red. The synthesized dyes showed good dyeing performances and fastness on cotton fabric. Because of the intramolecular color matching, the new reactive dyes have significant advantage in the colors and the reproducibility. The problem of low dyeing compatibility may be resolved. This work has important significance for the synthesis and applications of new dyes by intramolecular color matching.

  • A dicyanoisophorone-based near-infrared fluorescent probe and its application for detecting thiophenols in water and living cells

    We report herein a new dicyanoisophorone-based colorimetric and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe for rapid detection of thiophenols. This probe possesses a remarkable large Stokes shift (208 nm) and works in almost pure aqueous solution under mild conditions. More importantly, it displays a rapid, highly selective and sensitive dual colorimetric and NIR fluorescent turn-on signal responses for thiophenols and allows the detection of thiophenols in the presence of analytes including amino acids, biothiols and aliphatic thiols. Moreover, the fluorescence of this probe at 655 nm displays a good linear relationship with the thiophenol concentration ranging from 0 to 20 μM, and the detection limit is as low as 12 nM. Furthermore, the practicability of this new probe has been successfully proved by detection of thiophenol in real water samples and bioimaging of thiophenol in living cells.

  • Optical anti-counterfeiting of a single molecule by two solvents based on intra- and intermocular excited state proton transfer mechanisms

    Organic dye molecules with excited state proton transfer property gain huge scientific interest owing to the design flexibility and functional diversity. However, the anti-counterfeiting of a single dye molecule through intra- and intermocular excited state proton transfer (ESIPT and ESPT) has yet to be achieved. This study demonstrates a simple and efficient approach to realize the anti-counterfeiting of a single dye molecule in a PMMA film. We control the 1-hydroxypyrene-2-carbaldehyde (HP) to be fluorescent or not through two different solvents based on ESIPT and ESPT mechanisms. Furthermore, we investigate the detailed information of excited-state dynamics for HP in two solvents, aiming at exploring the mechanisms of totally different luminescence property, through the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Meanwhile, the theoretical TDDFT research sheds light on the correlation between molecular structure and luminescence character. Specifically, the fluorescence of the molecule in acetonitrile is quenched by an ESIPT (127 fs) induced intersystem crossing (11.8 ps) whereas the ESPT (195 fs) and following aldehyde group rotation (26.5 ps) make the molecule to exhibit a strong luminescence property in dimethyl sulfoxide. The results are promising and offer new avenues to realize the greener and sustainable anti-counterfeiting of a single dye molecule.

  • Tetrabenztriazacorrole (TBC) as efficient dopant-free hole transporting materials for organo metal halide perovskite solar cells

    An easily prepared, cost-effective and solution processable tetraphenoxy substituted phosphorous triazatetrabenzo corrole (PVTBC) was synthesized and tested as the hole transporting material (HTM) for MAPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSC). This phthalocyanine analogue HTM works efficiently in the absence of any dopant or additive for the device composed of FTO/c-TiO2/m-TiO2/MAPbI3/HTM/Au. The optimized undoped mesoscopic solar cell device based on the PVTBC compound exhibited a good power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.1% (measured at 100 mW cm2 illumination, AM 1.5G), together with a good long-term stability under ambient conditions, in contrast to the PCE of 11.2% for Spiro-OMeTAD under the same condition. This result paves the way for further developing TBC as a new type of low cost HTMs.

  • Pyrimidyl-substituted anthracene fluorophores: Syntheses, absorption spectra, and photophysical properties

    Twelve new polycyclic aromatic chromophores whose structures recall 9,10-substituted anthracene have been prepared and their absorption spectra, and luminescence properties (both in ethanol and dichloromethane solution at room temperature and in MeOH/EtOH (4:1 v/v) rigid matrix at 77 K) have been analyzed as well as pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy and computational studies have been performed. The compounds have variously decorated pyrimidyl groups as substituents of the anthracene framework. The compounds are conveniently grouped in two series: 1–4 and 11, in which the pyrimidine nitrogen atoms are on the external side with respect to the anthracene framework (Ext-type compounds), and 5–10, where the pyrimidine nitrogen atoms are pointing towards the anthracene platform (Int-type compounds). Compound 12 contains both a pyrimidine substituent with “inner” nitrogen atoms (“Int”) and a pyrimidine with “outer” nitrogen atoms (“Ext”). All the new species are quite efficient luminophores (spectral range of emission maxima: 400–450 nm at 77 K; 415–520 nm at room temperature; emission lifetimes: 0.25–8.7 ns range; emission quantum yields ranging between 0.08 to 0.99, with a single exception), with their photophysical properties depending on the connection scheme of the pyrimidyl groups to the anthryl platform (i.e., Int-type vs Ext-type compounds). Luminescence originating from locally excited π−π* anthracene-based singlet states, delocalized states largely involving the pyrimidyl moieties, and charge transfer states has been identified. For the Int-type series, the initially-prepared excited state can deactivate via interconversion to a saddle-shaped conformation, opening the way to fast nonradiative decays.

  • A sandwich clamshell-type phthalocyaninato quadruple-decker binuclear lutetium(III) complex: Synthesis and spectral properties

    A quadruple-decker sandwich complex of lutetium (III) based on a clamshell-type phthalocyanine ligand has been obtained in a high yield (90%). The obtained compound was characterized by a combination of high resolution MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometry, UV–Vis–NIR, EPR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. An investigation of the absorption spectrum in the NIR region showed maxima at 918 nm and in the 1260–1520 nm area. The EPR data and the intense absorption in the NIR region suggest this complex to be a stable biradical.

  • Chemoselective detection of alkyl halides via an iridium(III) luminescent probe

    The high reactivity of alkyl halides towards nucleophiles renders them as acutely toxic and mutagenic agents. Therefore, it is urgent to develop simple, sensitive, and selective methods for the detection of alkylating agents in a wide range of scenarios. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel cyclometalated iridium(III) complex Ir_1 as a rapid and effective chemosensor for a range of alkyl halides based on cycloaddition reaction. Ir_1 displayed an enhanced luminescence with the increase of BnBr-thiourea concentration, within a linear range of 0.8–8 μM BnBr-thiourea, and the detection limit at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 was as low as 0.39 μM.

  • A multidentate ligand chromophore with rhodamine-triazole-pyridine units and its acting mechanism for dual-mode visual sensing trace Sn2+

    A multidentate ligand chromophore, combining rhodamine, triazole, and pyridine units, was identified and developed for the first time. Using triazole and pyridine rings as coordinating functional recognition groups, it was expected to selectively recognize Sn2+ to form some stable 5-member or 6-member rings with nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Under the optimized conditions, the ligand chromophore could selectively react with trace Sn2+ in CH3CN/H2O (99/1, v/v), accompanying with obvious changes in fluorescent spectrum, ultraviolet-visible spectrum and visual color. For fluorescent analysis, a turn-on fluorescence at 587 nm was found and increased linearly in the range of 1.2–6.2 × 10−7 mol L−1 Sn2+ from colorless to orange. For ultraviolet-visible one, a new absorption peak at 560 nm emerged with a linear range of 2.0–11.0 × 10−7 mol L−1 Sn2+ from colorless to pink. The action mechanism between the ligand chromophore and Sn2+ was confirmed basing on ultraviolet-visible titration, 1H NMR titration, Job's plot, binding constants and theoretical calculation in detail.

  • New pigments based on carminic acid and smectites: A molecular investigation

    Hybrid materials based on montmorillonite, a cationic polymer and carminic acid were prepared. The surface charge of montmorillonite was inversed thanks to the cationic polymer, polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride. Samples were characterized by a set of different techniques including Infrared (IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopies to highlight the nature of the interactions between the organic and inorganic parts. The photo-stability of the samples was tested for different durations, and L*a*b* parameters were measured. It was possible to propose an approach for the degradation mechanism of the supported dye thanks to EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) spectroscopy. The experimental data were in agreement with the theoretical periodic DFT calculations where a molecular scheme of the adsorption complex was proposed, and the importance of hydration on the stability of the adsorption complex highlighted.

  • Design, synthesis and evaluation of HepDirect fluorescence probes mediated by asialoglycoprotein receptor

    A series of HepDirect pH responsive fluorescence probes of glycosyl-rhodamine are synthesized. The recognition trend of glucoside < lactoside < galactoside illuminates that the galactose is a targeting group toward HepG2 cells and its recognition is affected by the bulk of targeting group. The HepG2 cells binding trend of RDGal1< RDGal2< RDGal3 supports the cluster effect of galactose. RDGal3 with the optimum targeting potential is verified to selectively recognize HepG2 cells via a galactose dependent ASGPR binding mechanism. These nontoxic probes could be controllably activated by the acidic microenvironment of cancer cells, which is very significant to achieve diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma and provide a novel HepDirect carrier for precision treatment of hepatocarcinoma.

  • New emissive mononuclear copper (I) complex: Structural and photophysical characterization focusing on solvatochromism, rigidochromism and oxygen sensing in mesoporous solid matrix

    We report the structural and photophysical property analyses of a new emissive copper (I) complex CuI(PPh3) (L) (1, L = 4,4′-dimethoxy-2,2′-bipyridine) which demonstrates solvatochromism. When recrystallized from acetonitrile, the originally orange color of 1 becomes yellow and demonstrates a blue-shifted, broad emission spectrum. This process is reversed when the yellow solid is redissolved in dichloromethane and recrystallized. The lattice parameters and angles found were a = 17.769 Å, β = 114.05° and a = 11.555 Å, angle β = 92.70° for the orange and yellow forms of 1, respectively, and there are notable structure differences for CuI(PPh3) (L) in these two solids. When loaded into a mesoporous silica, the emission blue shift becomes greater, indicating a strong rigidochromic effect at room temperature. The emission from such copper complex loaded mesoporous silica matrix is quenched by oxygen and this quenching has been quantified.

  • Self-cleaned photoluminescent viscose fabric incorporated lanthanide-organic framework (Ln-MOF)

    Photoluminescent textiles emitted light in ultraviolet (UV)-radiation region has advanced a variety of applications including military and police clothes. The current study reports the preparation of photoluminescent viscose fabrics incorporated lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) and their applications for self-cleaning. In situ growth of Ln (Eu3+, Tb3+) MOF into viscose fabrics were achieved using Ln (NO3)3 and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride as organic ligand. The in-growth Ln-MOF within fabrics were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under the UV lamb (345 nm), Eu-MOF@viscose fabric and Tb-MOF@viscose fabric visually emitted red and green color, respectively. The excitation-emission spectra showed the spectra for the 5D0→7F0-4 transitions and 5D4→7F5 transitions in case of Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF@viscose fabrics, respectively. The photoluminescent properties of Ln-MOF@viscose fabrics were enhanced after reactive dying process. The self-cleaning functions of Ln-MOF@viscose fabrics were estimated through studying the photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye over the fabrics. After 120 min irradiation time, the photo-degradation of RhB dye was 85–97%, indicating high performance of Ln-MOF@viscose fabric. The materials are promising for advanced applications including protective clothing, textile-based sensors, smart tagging and tickets.

  • Surface modified LnxLa1-xF3 (Ln = Dy, Yb) nanoparticles: Toward bright NIR luminescence

    AbstractThe NIR emitting nanoparticles obtained by surface modification of Yb3+ or Dy3+ doped LaF3 with aromatic carboxylate anions were studied. The NIR luminescence of dysprosium fluoride nanoparticles surface-modified with an organic ligand was demonstrated for the first time, whilst the brightness of NIR luminescence of surface modified ytterbium fluoride nanoparticles was estimated. The detailed study of the dependence of luminescence intensity as a function of Dy fraction in both bimetallic coordination compounds and bimetallic dysprosium fluorides allowed determining the optimal Dy…Dy distance to obtain the maximum luminescence intensity.

  • Luminescent columnar liquid crystals based on AIE tetraphenylethylene with hydrazone groups bearing multiple alkyl chains

    A series of novel tetraphenylethylene aromatic acylhydrazone derivatives 11, 12 and 13 with 4, 8 or 12 alkyl chains were designed and synthesized in yields of 82–85%. Studies on the mesomorphic properties suggested the ordered hexagonal columnar mesophase for compounds 11, 12 and 13. The increase in the number of alkyl chains was favourable for decreasing the phase-transition temperatures and extending the mesophase temperature range. Further, samples 11, 12 and 13 presented an excellent AIE effect. The fluorescence intensities increased by 70, 84 and 43 times for samples 11, 12 and 13, respectively. The absolute fluorescence quantum yields were 18.7%, 27.4% and 23.8% in solid films at room temperature and 6.7%, 24.2% and 17.3% in the mesophase. These results suggested that the number of alkyl chains greatly influenced the fluorescence emission and sample 12 with 8 alkyl chains exhibited the strongest fluorescence emission. Sample 12 also displayed the electroluminescence performance on OLED device.

  • Triphenylamine, carbazole or tetraphenylethylene-based gold(I) complexes: Tunable solid-state room-temperature phosphorescence and various mechanochromic luminescence characteristics

    Three novel gold(I) complexes based on triphenylamine, carbazole or tetraphenylethylene moiety have been successfully designed and synthesized. Meanwhile, their structures were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their solid-state luminescence characteristics were surveyed by photoluminescence spectroscopy, and their distinct mechanical stimulus-responsive behaviors in the solid state were also investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Interestingly, the solid-state phosphorescence and emission lifetimes of these mononuclear gold(I) complexes 1–3 could be tuned by introducing different fluorophores involving triphenylamine, carbazole or tetraphenylethylene. Furthermore, luminogen 1 exhibited switchable mechanochromic luminescence behavior with color change from yellow to colorless, and the solid-state luminescence on-off mechanochromism between yellow-green and colorless of luminogen 2 could also be observed. However, no mechanochromism phenomenon was observed for tetraphenylethene-containing luminogen 3. The powder X-ray diffraction results suggested that the unusual high-contrast mechanochromism characteristics of luminogens 1 and 2 could be attributed to a crystalline-to- amorphous morphology transition.

  • Multifunctional acrylic fibers prepared via in-situ formed silver nanoparticles: Physicochemical, UV radiation protection, and antistatic properties

    A single treatment that makes textiles multifunctional is very attractive to the textile chemical processors. In this study, multifunctional acrylic fibers were produced by in situ forming silver (Ag) nanoparticles at various concentrations of Ag and trisodium citrate (TSC). The exhaustion of silver into acrylic fibers and the reduction of Ag to Ag nanoparticles were carried out at 90 °C, well above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of this fiber in water. The effect of the concentration of Ag, Ag to TSC ratio, pH, and reaction time on the color strength, ultraviolet (UV) radiation absorption, surface electrical resistance and mechanical properties of the treated fibers were systematically investigated. It was found that if the concentration of Ag was less than 1% on the weight of acrylic fibers or the Ag to TSC ratio was less than 1:2, no color was produced. The color strength and UV radiation absorption capacity of the treated acrylic fibers increased with an increase in the concentration of Ag, and Ag to TSC ratio, and also with a decrease in the pH. On the other hand, the surface resistance of the treated acrylic fibers decreased with an increase in the concentration of Ag and a decrease in the treatment pH. The treated fibers showed excellent antibacterial activity, UV radiation absorption capacity, and also very good antistatic properties along with an excellent colorfastness to washing. Moreover, the developed treatment is highly durable to washing as after 20 washes the treated fibers lost their antibacterial activity only marginally.

  • Synthesis and photophysical properties of new perylene bisimide derivatives for application as emitting materials in OLEDs

    Three novel perylene diimide derivatives with bulky aromatic moieties (fluorene, carbazolyl-fluorene, and anthracyl-fluorene) connected via triple bonds with perylene core were successfully designed and synthesized. The chemical structure of prepared compounds was confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR and mass spectrometry. Their optimized ground-state geometry and frontier molecular orbitals were theoretically estimated based on density functional theory. The compounds undergo the reversible electrochemical reduction process and exhibit very low energy band gaps (1.56–1.98 eV) being promising for electronic applications. They also display excellent solubility, high thermal stability and luminescence in solution and in the solid state as a film in the red spectral region. The highest photoluminescence quantum yield (79% in solution and 28% in the film) was found for perylene diimide bearing fluorene unit. All molecules showed the ability for light emission under an applied voltage. The fabricated diodes with structure ITO/PEDOT:PSS/compound/Al exhibited electroluminescence with maximum emission band located between 685 and 732 nm. The most intense electroluminescence, which was additionally plasmonically enhanced by incorporating silver nanowires, was observed for the device based on molecules with anthracene structure.

  • An easily and environmentally friendly accessible small-molecule acetylenic donor for organic solar cells

    Photovoltaic aryl acetylenes may provide a green access to high performance electron donors for organic solar cells. Here we describe a solution-processable acetylenic molecule An(DTDPPA)2, which consists of a central anthracen-9,10-diyl unit and two dithienyldiketopyrrolopyrrole endgroups via acetylenic linkages. It's worth noting that the acetylenic linkages in An(DTDPPA)2 enable facile and green accessibility through Sonogashira reactions with atypically high yield and atom efficiency. In solid film An(DTDPPA)2 features an absorption peak at 630 nm with an emerging shoulder at 686 nm. The HOMO/LUMO level of An(DTDPPA)2 is estimated as −5.18/-3.62 eV according to cyclic voltammetry and the optical absorption onset. Due to the highly coplanar configuration and close packing, the hole mobility of the thermally annealed film of An(DTDPPA)2 was improved to as high as 9.30 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1. In combination with PC61BM, the bulk heterojunction solar cells provide a power conversion efficiency of 5.26% utilizing no processing additive or solvent vapor annealing. The results are carefully discussed in comparison to the related compounds without the acetylenic linkage and based on the DFT molecular modeling. The demonstrated dramatic effects of acetylenic linkages in this work may encourage and motivate more efforts to design easily accessible and eco-friendly organic semiconductors.

  • Exploration of highly efficient light conversion agents for agricultural film based on the bay-substituted perylene diimides derivatives

    To explore highly efficient yellow-green light conversion agents used for agricultural film, six bay-substituted perylene diimides and their polyvinyl chloride doped films (by 0.5% weight addition) were prepared. The maximum absorption and emission peaks of the luminogens-doped polyvinyl chloride films are located at 581–609 nm and 647–667 nm, respectively. More importantly, the fluorescence quantum yields of PTCDA, t-BuOPTCDA and m-MeOPTCDA are up to 0.88, 0.84 and 0.78 in doping film, respectively. The strengthening solar radiation and outdoor exposure to sunlight last 160 min and two months respectively and the emission intensity of m-MeOPTCDA-doped film displays slight changes and 9% fluctuation in turn. Combined transmittance, compatibility, mechanical properties and thermal stability, m-MeOPTCDA is chosen as the best effective light conversion materials. To better understand the optical properties of the luminogens, molecular configuration optimization, electron cloud density distribution and molecular orbital energy levels were completed by theoretical calculation. Further, the double layer coextrusion film containing m-MeOPTCDA and Triphenyl acrylonitrile is succeed in dual band excitation(350 nm and 580 nm)and emission (430 nm and 651 nm), by optimizing the proportion of m-MeOPTCDA and Triphenyl acrylonitrile, the special light conversion films for different crops will be expected.

    Six new Europium (III) complexes with ternary and tetrakis structures - Eu(BID)3(PHEN), Eu (MBID)3(PHEN), [Eu(BID)4]−N+(Et)4, [Eu (MBID)4]−N+(Et)4, [Eu(BID)4]−N+(Bu)4, and [Eu (MBID)4]−N+(Bu)4 (BID – 2-benzoyl-1,3-indandionate, MBID - 2-(4-methylbenzoyl)-1,3-indandionate and PHEN – 1,10-phenantroline) are synthesized, characterized, and incorporated into poly-N-vinylcarbazole (PVK) and poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrices. Complex structure shows significant effect on thermal properties and emission properties of complexes in solid-state. Used countercations (N+(Et)4 or N+(Bu)4) greatly affects complex solubility in solvents, absolute photoluminescence quantum yields and photoluminescence lifetimes in solid-state. Complexes exhibit red-light emission attributed to 5D0→7FJ (J = 0–4) transitions of Eu3+ ion with moderate to high quantum yields (0.06–0.60), bi-exponential lifetimes and pure red-light CIE chromaticity coordinates (x = 0.670; y = 0.330) in solid-state. Incorporation of synthesized complexes in PVK matrices leads to significant emission intensity and quantum yield decrease.However, doped PMMA films with synthesized complexes exhibit moderate PLQY (0.09–0.14) and longer lifetime values than in solid-state and could show potential application as polymer optical fibers or in OLED's and other devices.

  • Phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole with thiophene rings toward OLEDs application

    A series of phenanthro [9,10-d]imidazole derivatives with thiophene units were synthesized using the Debus-Radziszewski reaction. A study of the optical, electrochemical and thermal properties of the new compounds was conducted. All derivatives were found to be thermally stable, with high melting temperatures (250–267 °C) and with the beginning of decomposition starting above 350 °C. They underwent the multistage electrochemical reduction. All phenanthro [9,10-d]imidazole derivatives were luminescent in solution and in solid state. In solution they emitted radiation with maximum emission band located at 414–461 nm with photoluminescence quantum yields in the range of 56%–64% in chloroform. As films they emitted blue light with ΦPL ranging from 12 to 23%. The possibility of applying one of the synthesized compound in optoelectronics devices was studied as well. The devices showed intense electroluminescence which can be further enhanced by increasing the content of 2-(2,2′-bithiophen-5-yl)-1-phenyl-1H-phenanthro [9,10-d]-imidazole in the active layer.

    A novel asymmetrical biindolo [2,3-b]quinoxaline derivative (IQIQ) was prepared via the CuI catalysed C-N Ullmann coupling method and fully characterized. For comparison, two solution-processing organic transistor memory devices (A and B) were constructed. In device A with IQIQ, the parameters of large memory window (48 V) but weak on/off current ratio (∼101 at 104 s) indicated the good hole trapping ability determined by the matched HOMO level but weak endurance property of IQIQ. Meanwhile, device B with PS blended IQIQ presented not only similar large memory window but also apparently improved the hole endurance property of IQIQ determined by the blending material which intrinsically acted as the bifunctional tunneling:floating gate layer.

  • Boosting the turn-on fluorescent signaling ability of thiazole orange dyes: The effectiveness of structural modification site and its unusual interaction behavior with nucleic acids

    New fluorescent dyes derivatized on a classical thiazole orange framework are able to show unexpectedly strong interaction signal and unusual binding selectivity with different structures of nucleic acid, particularly when bound with double-stranded DNA or G-quadruplex DNA. The present study reveals that these small binding ligands simply bearing an additional amino side group on its parent molecule of thiazole orange have almost no background fluorescence in solution. Conversely, they are able to produce an extremely strong yellow emission signal upon interaction with targeting nucleic acids in live cells. The induced fluorescence intensity was approximately 10–15 times stronger than that of thiazole orange. The dyes are therefore excellent fluorescent stains for bio-sensing and bio-imaging applications. It is particularly suitable for the fluorescence microscopy experiments requiring very low working concentration (0.25 μM or less) targeting nucleic acids. This was demonstrated using pu27 G-quadruplex DNA, which has a low limit of detection (LOD = 3–4 nM) while thiazole orange was much higher (LOD = 48.7 nM) under the same conditions. In addition, it was found that structural modification on the quinolinium scaffold of thiazole orange was less effective than modification on the benzothiazole moiety. The findings of the present study provide important information for structural advancement of small molecules based on the widely used thiazole orange skeleton, resulting in analogues that are able to achieve higher sensitivity and selectivity for targeting a specific class of nucleic acids. Computational docking studies were also conducted to illustrate the interaction behaviors of the dyes with different DNA structures.

This research provides a viable and alternative procedure to construct cryptand-based stimuli-responsive fluorescent molecular switches by external stimuli acting on guest molecules.

    A novel zinc(II) metal-organic framework (MOF) {[(CH3)2NH2]2 [Zn5 (TDA)4 (TZ)4].4DMF}n (1) (H2TDA = thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and HTZ = 1H-1,2,4-Triazole) based on Zn5(COO)2 (TZ)4 pentametallic clusters and thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid was synthesized and structurally characterized via the mixed-ligand strategy. This MOF exhibits a uninodal 6-connected anionic framework with pcu topology and shows solvent stability. Post-functionalization via cation exchange of 1 with Eu3+ and Tb3+ afforded two lanthanide (III) functionalized MOFs: Eu3+@1 and Tb3+@1. 1 as well as Eu3+@1 and Tb3+@1 were utilized as a highly selective and sensitive turn-off luminescent sensors for detecting aniline, benzaldehyde in DMF and Cr2O72−, CrO42− in water with low detection limits. More importantly, it is rather rare in MOF-based luminescent probes that 1 and its lanthanide (III) post-functionalized matrials (Eu3+@1 and Tb3+@1) can detect aniline, benzaldehyde, Cr2O72− and CrO42−. Furthermore, the sensitivity of 1 as luminescent probes for detecting aniline and benzaldehyde could be improved via post-functionalization with Eu3+ ions.

    An acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) conjugated small molecule, DHII-EH-TR, was designed, synthesized, and its solar cell performance studied. The DHII-EH-TR molecule with its extended fused aromatic core had a narrow bandgap and displayed red-shifted absorption. To investigate its photovoltaic properties and device application, small molecule-based organic photovoltaics (SMOPVs) were fabricated having the conventional structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/DHII-EH-TR:PC70BM/ZnO NPs/Al (PEDOT:PSS, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic acid; ZnO NPs, ZnO nanoparticles). Solar cells made with a blend of 1,8-diiodooctane with ZnO NPs generated the highest performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.60%. Charge dynamics and transport, microscopic thin film analysis, and morphology were studied to explain the performance of SMOPVs made with DHII-EH-TR.

    Ce3+-activated single phase β-Ca2Si(O,N)4 (CSON) and α′-Sr2Si(O,N)4 (SSON) oxonitridosilicate phosphors were synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction method at 1100 °C using LiF as a flux. For comparative purposes, their oxide equivalents, β-Ca2SiO4 (CSO) and α′-Sr2SiO4 (SSO), doped with Ce3+ were obtained using the same synthesis method. The incorporation of nitrogen in the phosphors was confirmed by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The formation of Sr-N and Si-N bonds can be observed in the FT-IR spectra. The oxide phosphors showed single intense broad band of Ce3+ emissions centered at 415 (CSO:Ce3+) and 425 nm (SSO: Ce3+) after ultraviolet irradiation. The oxonitridosilicate phosphors exhibited two-band emissions from Ce3+ occupying two Ca2+ or Sr2+ sites. The emissions were red shifted compared to their oxide counterparts, blue-green for CSON:Ce3+ and green for SSON:Ce3+. The thermal stability and quantum yields (QY) of oxonitridosilicate phosphors were significantly improved compared with respective oxide phosphors. Exceptional thermal stability of SSON:Ce3+ phosphor (90% of initial emission intensity at 200 °C) and high QY (85%) means that this phosphor can be used in white light emitting diodes.

    We synthesized three different families of quadrupolar dyes, differing by the nature of their aromatic central cores (phenyl, fluorenyl, anthracenyl), in which we systematically varied the length of the π-conjugated backbone and the nature of the central bridge. We compared their linear and non-linear spectroscopic and photophysical features. We showed that the introduction of a diyne bridge is efficient in consistently increasing the Stokes shifts in these fluorophores, especially in high polarity solvents. By a combined theoretical and spectroscopic study we show that this feature is favoured by distortion of their π-conjugated skeleton at the electronic ground state. Unfortunately, this distortion process is generally detrimental to their fluorescence quantum yields. However, in the course of this study, we identify a particularly promising dye, that combines a large two-photon absorption (650 GM@760 nm) while keeping efficient emission (ϕf = 0.3) in the far-red/NIR (ca 700 nm) in polar solvent (DMSO).

  • Characterisation of silicon, zirconium and aluminium coated titanium dioxide pigments recovered from paint waste

    Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the major white pigment used by the paint industry. However, the production of TiO2 is associated with a high carbon footprint. An alternative source of pigment could be created by developing a method to recover it from waste paint. In this paper two rutile pigments with different surface treatments were recovered from paint by a thermal recycling process. The pigments were analysed using powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface area measurements (BET), laser diffraction for particle size analysis and zeta potential measurements before and after the recycling process. It was concluded that the rutile cores of both pigments were intact and there were no major changes in particle size distribution or surface charge for either pigment induced by the recycling process. However, XPS and zeta potential measurements showed that the surface coating of the pigments can be more or less degraded depending on the chemical nature, which might imply the need for further re-coating after-treatment. Another option would be to find another application for the pigment where the quality and function of the coating is of less importance.

    Indoor solar cells are an attractive option to install in buildings to harvest the energy emitted by indoor lighting. They can be implemented as a stand-alone grid, or as part of an integrated energy harvesting unit. Previous research has utilized amorphous silicon and dye-sensitized solar cells for power generation from a fluorescent light source. In our study, we evaluated the applicability of a poly (3-hexylthiophene):indene-C60 bisadduct solar cell to harvest the light spectrum from an indoor light-emitting diode (LED). Because the absorption peak of poly (3-hexylthiophene) overlaps the LED spectrum peak, it serves as a good candidate for indoor light harvesting under an LED source. We have extracted the power conversion efficiency of the solar cell under different LED illuminance values, such as 200, 800, 1000, and 2000 lx. With the help of finite-difference time domain simulations, we optimized the solar device structure for each illuminance. The results detailed in this article were intended to assess the applicability of organic solar cells as indoor photovoltaics, and to provide a methodology to optimize the photovoltaic structure to maximize its efficiency.

    Some sensing properties of a new D-π-A dye (dye3) based on hydroxyl-methoxybenzene donor and isophorone acceptor moiety were investigated by using spectroscopic and electrical measurements. The effects of anion, ethylamine and temperature on the color/emission changes of dye3 in solution and resistance changes in thin-film were evaluated and characterized. Dye3 exhibited colorimetric and fluorometric changes in response to cyanide anion. The reversible colorimetric sensing mechanism of dye3 to the cyanide, based on the complex formation by anion binding, was studied with the use of 1H NMR analyses together with theoretical calculations. Then the interactions of dye3 with three ethylamines (mono-, di-, and tri-ethylamine) were investigated. Dye3 showed different degree of changes in UV/Vis absorption spectra when exposed to different ethylamines. From the kinetic studies based on the association constant calculation and theoretical calculations, we revealed that different interaction distance between dye3 and ethylamines caused discrepancy in absorption spectrum changes. Finally, the effect of temperature on the electrical properties of dye3 was explored. Dye3 showed an increase or decrease in electrical resistance because of its semiconducting property. In this article, some unique properties of D-π-A-type dye3 were systemically investigated, and these properties suggest the potential applicability of dye3 to the multi-stimuli (anion, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and temperature) responsible smart chemosensors.

  • Crosslinked fluorescent conjugated polymer nanoparticles for high performance explosive sensing in aqueous media

    In this work, water dispersible crosslinked fluorescent poly(triphenylamine-co-benzothiadiazole)s (PTPABT) nanoparticles have been synthesized via Suzuki-type coupling (A3 + B2) in a toluene/water miniemulsion. Dialysis method was used to purify the PTPABT nanoparticles with a diameter range of 40–70 nm. The good dispersion property of the polymer in water could be attributed to the small sizes of the PTPABT nanoparticles. The obtained PTPABT nanoparticles possess microporous characteristic and display bright red emission in aqueous solution, which makes them possible to detect the nitro-aromatic explosive in aqueous media by monitoring the photoluminescence. The sensing property of the polymer nanoparticles towards 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB) in aqueous media has been researched, resulting a Stern-Volmer quenching constant Ksv of 1.22 × 104 M−1. The most attractive character of the conjugated polymer nanoparticles is the combination of both physical stability and solution-processability, thus making them good candidates for sensors and optoelectronic applications.

  • (Bi)phenyl substituted 9-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)carbazoles as low cost hole transporting materials for efficient red PhOLEDs

    Two low-cost 9-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)carbazole-based derivatives with aryl substitutions were synthesized by simple procedure and then investigated. The respective glass transition temperatures of the materials were estimated to be higher than 90 °C, which can provide morphologically-stable amorphous films for applications in organic light emitting diodes. The compounds possess adequate ionization potentials and suitable triplet energies, which make them suitable hole transporting materials for use in red phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes. The respective peak efficiencies of the red devices with the p-type dopants were recorded at 8.7% (5.6 cd/A and 3.9 lm/W) and at 8.7% (5.4 cd/A and 3.8 lm/W), correspondingly, demonstrating high potential of the material for applications in light emitting diodes. The characteristics indicated that the devices with the aryl substituted 9-(2,2-diphenylvinyl)carbazoles exhibit better performance than those of widely used hole transporting 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC) -based device.
