A [2]rotaxane featuring a functional organometallic Ag8 host, its transmetalation to the respective Au8 analogue, and reversible switching to an organic [3]rotaxane under acidic conditions are demonstrated. The interlocked assembly enhances the kinetic stability of the NHC host complex by a factor of >1000, which corresponds to the first observation of a stabilizing “rotaxand effect”.
