Five LnIII (Ln = Pr, Tb, Yb, Lu) sandwich and half-sandwich complexes with bulky silyl-cyclooctatetraenyl ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Attempted oxidation of [Li(DME)3][Tb(COT′′)2] with AgI did not give neutral [Tb(COT′′)2] but the half-sandwich complex [Li(DME)2][Tb2(µ-I)3(COT′′)2] [COT′′ = 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctatetraene dianion].
