The reversible transformations between the second-sphere salts guest⊂[H2L]2+·[MCl4]2– [L = N,N′-dibenzyl-(±)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane] and the coordination complexes [MCl2(L)] are investigated. The coordination complexes and second-sphere adducts show distinct fluorescence properties, and ZnCl2(L) shows potential for the selective sensing of nitroaromatic explosives.
