Combining forces enables the generation of α-carbonyl cations from vinyl cations in an acid-catalyzed process. These intermediates are highly reactive and thus undergo hydrogen and carbon shift reactions with unusual selectivities. Mechanistic analysis confirmed their intermediacy and provided a prediction scheme for the migratory aptitude of different substituents.
