Bowls and spoons: Trichalcogenasumanene ortho-quinones, synthesized by the regioselective transformation of heterobuckybowl trichalcogensumanenes, showed NIR absorption and ON/OFF fluorescence in response to electrochemical stimuli. Molecular engineering of these compounds resulted in various heteropolycycles, such as molecular spoons with semiconducting behavior and/or solid-state emission (see scheme) and a [7-6-6]-fused curved π-system.
