Revealing pathogens: A ratiometric fluorescent probe (CTX-HN) for the detection of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) activity is reported. This reagent exhibits a change in fluorescent ratio of over 2500-fold upon enzymatic hydrolysis. Adoption of the core structure of cefotaxime as an enzymatic recognition moiety in this probe results in excellent selectivity to ESBLs over other prevalent β-lactamases.
