Polyhalogenated ions with the formulations [B10X10]2– and [H3NB12X11] (X = Cl, Br, I) are accessible by the treatment of borates with elemental halogens in glass pressure vessels. An electrochemical study of [B10X10]2– in aqueous buffers is presented along with the pKa values for the [H3NB12X11] system. Despite an unusual chemical behaviour, N substitutions were feasible, even for [H3NB12Br11].
