Perhaps we should start with the name. Spain was neutral during the First World War; its press was uncensored. So when a wave of influenza hit the Iberian peninsula in May, 1918, it made the papers. The disease had been tearing through Allied troops on the Western Front for several weeks, and the first registered case had been two months earlier, in a military camp in Kansas, USA. But this information was not in the public domain. The authorities of the warring nations felt that letting their citizens know it was not only the enemy attacking their troops would be bad for morale.
