The medical management of people with indefinite sex or differences of sex development (DSD)—some of whom identify as intersex—has gone through substantial transformations in recent years. The modern approach to management of DSD in the USA, Australia, and Europe was conceived in the 1950s at Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, MD, USA) through a collaboration of leading physicians from various disciplines, including paediatrics, urology, plastic surgery, psychiatry, and psychology. Their work led to the development of present treatment protocols issued by professional societies.
